Mindfulness in everyday life

Mindfulness in everyday life

Our busy, full lives leave us little time or space to think - no wonder we are often stressed, tired – angry even.

Drawing on my knowledge and experience of meditation and Mindfulness, I’ve designed this three-hour workshop to create that space for you.

There are schools of thought that suggest setting aside 30 minutes each day for Mindfulness which is fabulous however, I think that’s unrealistic given the demands of our fast-paced world. It could be unsustainable for many people, which would be a shame.

To re-programme the mind, we need to begin with small steps because if something is easy, we are more likely to do it. So my workshop focuses on giving you techniques you can easily incorporate into your daily routine to bring calmness and clarity.

The aim being to start with 5 minutes of mindfulness every day, five separate minutes a day. Yes the 5 a day challenge – are you up for it?

It’s a safe environment where you can explore things you can mold to work for you in your everyday life.

I have two Introductions to Mindfulness in a Frantic World coming up in January 2018:

  • You can book to my webinar on Wednesday, 24th January 2018 here. You will have the option of a morning or evening session and all proceeds will go to Momentum, a wonderful charity which supports children who have cancer or other life-limiting conditions in South West London and all over Surrey.
  • Alternatively, you can attend the in-person seminar which will take place on Saturday, 27th January 2018. Booking details here.

What is Mindfulness?

“Mindfulness means paying attention, in a particular way, on purpose in the present moment, non-judgmentally”. Jon Kabat-Zinn - Professor of Medicine Emeritus and founder of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction.

I share Mindfulness as an ART:

A – Awareness of what you hold.

R – Realisation of what that’s doing to you.

T – Transformation through techniques and practice.

You’ll easily be able to fit the techniques I share with you into your daily schedule – no matter how busy you are. I’ll teach you how to focus on your thoughts, feelings, and surroundings, without judging what pops into your mind. You’ll learn how to concentrate on the moment without thinking about the past or worrying about the future.

When you focus your mind, you’ll think more creatively and be more open to change. And even small changes can create HUGE, positive impact.

Building resilience in a frantic world through Mindfulness -The recent global atrocities and BREXIT.  An unclear future.  Add all that to the usual stresses of daily life, and is it any wonder many of us feel uncertain and worried? We are living through what has been termed ‘VUCA times’. It stands for volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous.

You know those safety instructions we get on aircraft – the part where we’re told to put our own oxygen mask on first so we can help others? Well, I think that’s a good metaphor for what we need to do right now in our everyday lives. We waste so much time and energy trying to change things we have no control over instead of taking care of our number one asset -  OURSELVES. Mindfulness is an ideal way to give yourself some headspace.

Think of emotional well-being as a bank account. To buy food, pay the mortgage or go on holiday we need a healthy bank balance. In the same way we need to build up our emotional bank balance. As we learn and regularly practice more relaxation techniques, the emotional bank balance builds up so that when we are hit with those tough challenges, we are more stable and able to deal with them.

By being mindful and more present through simple tasks like conscious breathing and gratitude, the emotional bank balance can be topped up easily, regularly and daily.

Testimonials from previous workshops:

“A very simple, elegant presentation that served to remind me of the essence of mindfulness – being in the moment & not judging, acknowledging compassion and gratitude to ourselves and others.  It highlighted the benefits of building this into a busy schedule, how having the courage to stop for 5 minutes can be like pushing the reset button.” Gillian McDonagh, performance coach, attendee at June 2016 workshop
